It is that time of year again when people are catching the flu and colds.
Germs are everywhere. Germs get into your system through your mucus membranes.
How do they get there you wonder? Here is a thought.
The lady next to you on the train is holding a toddler with a crusty nose. The baby sneezes and spreads her germs. The mom takes a used tissue and wipes the babys face and then brushes the diaper bag off with her hands. The toddler drops her bottle. The mother thanks you by shaking your hand. The germs from the baby are now on your hand from touching the mothers hand.
You get off the commute train and stop at the coffee store. You stir your coffee with your finger. You rub your eyes with the same hand the mother shook. You notice the paper at your table and read an interesting headline. But the morning paper is stuck together with some jelly from a roll, so you lick your finger to get a better grip on the page to turn it. You read the article, finish your coffee, and casually rub your nose as you get ready to leave the table and go to work.
In the last 30 minutes you have exposed your body to the germs at least 4 times.
Do you wonder when you did that? Here's when you did it. Lets retrace your steps.
- Stirring your coffee with your finger.
- Rubbing your eye when something got into it.
- Licking your finger to turn the page.
- Scratching your nose.
Since most symptoms of viruses will show up in about 24 to 36 hours, if you were exposed midweek, by the weekend, you should be showing some symptoms like runny nose, cough, sore throat, etc. People you are around can catch the same germs you have. Your germs will be all over everything.
How can this be avoided? - Simply washing your hands can avoid this situation.
Washing your hands for at least 15 to 20 seconds with warm water and soap can kill most germs and protect your health. The germs enter our bodies through the mucus membranes in our eyes, nose, and mouth. When you touch those areas, you are literally putting the germ into your body!
Personal hand sanitizers work well when soap and water is not available. These work well when you are in a pinch. These don't replace soap and water.
